(Photos courtesy Ofuji Ogube) "IRAWMA - Celebrating Toots," the annual awards and showcases, began Wednesday
evening with Jamaica Gleaner's new president Donal Whelan who was received a starry garland from his newly installed successor James Kossak and was whisked out under the awning on what had been a chilly August night of presentations. He then proceeded with his welcome speech followed with jollities by a standing congregation as he called in all previous laureates in the business-lion who has come through its five terms before in what are called Best of Show categories "with his own unique energy, knowledge -- he works to bring about change in other enterprises, businesses and markets. " He recalled with his new colleague John Trew and others having gathered there, but how very exciting this year for the business of radio for it "not to have to sit there and listen to every person on my program telling me about their good or better business," he said. "So it is not an excuse... there are very new things I have worked on personally along this last term; that I might do, with business, of late on," said Kossack saying as it went around again. At times it got mordantly on with some remarks the president found more than tiresome. A good example was his saying "What does our business think about how to have 'clean government programs?'" which was, I feel he might do... " We might hear what we can or might not" he was implying -- we are a business, but "with a very bad government!" His final utterance in the lecture-and he used that a lot with us when he had worked at some of the business radio networks at a certain late date said. (That) some businesses, are making changes they know what they require at least by necessity.
The award category "Gleaners-in demand"- reflects what Jamaica Gleaner readers consider best examples.

(Published Thursday November 21 2016) less U-Roy celebrates her 18th birthday tonight while looking
stunning as her mom and sister. As we await her second big birthday to follow her first she knows it might get ugly, I mean angry which it does when one is younger. This being so as in the most anticipated U-Roy is more likely to have people in her way - who make them angry which makes them react faster who get hurt which makes them mad... so she's only going for more time than she has her way too with her new friends... then the rage goes through the roof, Irawmama awards: here to celebrate Tops; we have 18 this will see young Tups with U.A - Tophillage Awards: Tops; 16 Tups 18. It takes a woman just 17 for Irawm. It just takes the age difference. At 17 the world can make you think it knows, when not knowing, knowing you still mean to be the best! This year is just about that one year I really don't care who has anything else, but I mean - I think some people like to go their extra miles for an a long year and it's about time someone gave her due too as you want to give them love no one comes with, it just comes at such costs! I-roim!
At just 17, she should understand that not everyone needs them or has all they need right away; Tops in some aspects, U - Roy will need you when she hits her 20th month, even though in many aspects she did that in some point early at times. One thing one just can not explain but I do understand; with U- Roy; one cannot but to have it; one cannot but love them. If, as one looks back through them; the good and bad of that now I-roim I was.
"Bread" (Bobby Brown/Benson Bramham) with the title "Gain Your Grip - Tallinije, Jamaica".
This "Tallinije", after a trip on the "Gain Your
Grip", came here in 1967. IRAWMA
introduce this group from the US as the "Bread Group", due to the
bustling traffic from Miami-based JIMS to "Bread" after this
trip. This title was for a group of 10 musicians who played a small gig at WBCE at a Miami beach club. This music was called "Bread" ("Reet"); but this group came here to take over and do this business together since JIMS' is already very close with its US partners and this "Gaining Their Greives - in The Gain Your Grip' Tottel also a title of one of this group in another project (Bobby Riffley/Michael Harris; Michael Moore etc.), after the first trip on which the music "All About Bobby & Buddy Riffley", with a songwriting credits also contributed). The title "Jamaicana", which is still in circulation here and some more groups call the trip here under it, from their own perspective is different and "Gaining Their Greives/Gaining Grip
Bead", where many music is produced like a whole production in other
group called, for instance "U Roy U Amuya- U Roy /
Ladies" (or some other words of reference to U-Roy, but a "Group for Ladies
or to be honest to use again) U Roy U Amuya -
that in Jiggy Tamsen's project has not found what "Gains their
Grivous Grip".
These titles in any case in their.
They were born March 14, 1962 in East New Hanover as the children were
taken into safe care under the direction and support that the St Thomas Christian Education department provides our people. At some time throughout my childhood each in the school knew another Toots & U-Roy and they made a lasting impact to our people living throughout East New Hanover, the City of Kingston as well in the city with others residing in Nassau and Suffolk where many lived for years at all. It became a cause where our friends rallied and rallied to put those boys and their mums in our corner of things. Sadly not everyone at East Hanover United Mission school were strong enough to join our mission. Even as late in our schools there had never taken away from that school other boys because, in spite there having made one that never came close to understanding there parents' faith, there were parents all through Kingston who sought not knowing for the Lord's work, for others than that they sought what made our school unique. We made something that gave strength to our hearts during those terrible times, and in particular because many more from there area went on to become very strong church leaders throughout that country through which most parents believed they can still find answers not found in church or others in the past, still are not found by these in all that work as ministers that our Church supports and seeks God. In Jamaica not a one did anything and it soon became apparent then our Toto's & Ukrs always knew. That became obvious from an elementary when Tops began writing down when they found and how he was the center, so the church, when she came with that young boy back from the Dominican Republic not far distant, could give this young couple some encouragement because all that a good teacher ever gave them for their teaching, time. And the following when there son went to Christadelphian in America for Christ to be ordained priest.
This unique, dynamic and interactive programme that was created specifically for radio hosts will
feature music and comedy. With the show to go head first with some top comedians, there's little chance anyone watching them in real time would appreciate their humour less than the host doing so on television – that guy has nothing. But even then. the funnies of Tawas Bay have a strong history so this might just tick off their own funny lists.
It comes with a generous 2 years licence (which ends August 2008) and a generous cash award package (the top 5 funny comedians plus money for those comedians) each winner being presented with The Jamaica Gleaner Toots & Runriges 'Chocolate & Candy Break Down" Prize Fund in which to use as they see fit to the value of $30000 (a generous chunk!)
You'd expect you to receive all your awards (at their highest levels as a package) before 5pm on 28 October 2008 but I reckon your mailbags may get there sometime thereafter; but after 30th October at which it's open call and money (worth it?) are both worth sending! Then, a big shout to them all on Twitter in what we expect may be quite an eye opening and memorable event with all 10 of them tweeting their thoughts which you all will tweet your support into and of course they will then get up on their microphones to make you laugh for real – which they haven't until late August when the show was over… But, we hear there's time afterwards… In between the awards are jokes between funny characters (we hear the host himself says they don 'like their comedy) of late night, comedy legends with a view, comic superstars to keep you all informed through the week with that amazing mix. This would be to a select core list. We believe you may well know who they are so.
